Teen Counseling
You are concerned about your teen’s behavior. You’ve noticed your teen seems more irritable. They seem overwhelmed. In addition, you've noticed that they seem sad. You aren’t sure how to help your teen and it’s difficult when they isolate in their room for long periods of time.
Life As A Teen Can Be Tough
Teenagers face many challenges. These challenges include peer and societal pressure, and academic pressure. They can also be about what’s going on in the world around them. This stress can be difficult for teens to manage alone. Your teen is old enough to have their own thoughts, opinions, and identity. At the same time, they still need guidance and support from you as their parent or caretaker. Teenagers are exploring their own identity and trying to figure out their place in the world. With all of these issues, it’s common for teens to experience struggles with mental health.
Common Reasons Teens Begin Counseling
As a therapist for teens, I know that every teen is different. They are affected by situations in many different ways. With this in mind, here are a few common reasons to start teen counseling:
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
• Struggle with identity or self-esteem
• Gender or sexuality issues
• School and social-related issues
• Trouble getting along with parents or siblings
• Difficulty adjusting to life changes
• Feeling lonely or trouble sleeping
• Want to talk about difficult topics with someone other than family or friends
Teen Counseling Will Help Them Thrive
Teen counseling can help prevent the current struggles your teen is facing from getting worse. In teen counseling, many teens learn to overcome challenging situations in their life. It’s important for teens to feel comfortable. And, it's important they trust a therapist before they decide to share their struggles. This is why I work on building a strong relationship with your teen. In teen counseling, I do my best to make counseling a welcoming and healing experience. Through my experience as a teen therapist, I have seen the best outcome this way.
I understand the current issues teens face as members of Gen Z. There seems to be a lot of concerns on their minds. Working with a teen therapist can help your teen better understand and cope with issues. Teen counseling can also help you, as a parent or caregiver, to feel more at ease about your teen’s mental health and future.
The Better Life Therapy Approach to Teen Counseling
In teen counseling, we partner with your teen to help them uncover the source of pain. We do this in a calm and compassionate environment. Your teen will learn a variety of skills to help them positively cope with thoughts, emotions, and related stressors. The first goal as a therapist is to make your teen feel comfortable and heard. Your teen may feel nervous to talk to an adult about challenges they are having, but that’s a natural experience. I want your teen to feel respected, meaning they will have the space to voice their needs in the counseling process. Your teen will be treated as equals and their opinions will be respected.
Considerations of Teen Counseling For Parents
The types of treatments we use during teen counseling depend on the issues your teen is having. We also consider the goals we have for therapy. During your teen’s first appointment, you will be given a chance to meet with me to express your concerns. Additionally, you can identify some things you would like your teen to work on in counseling. In the following sessions, I will meet with your teen to identify their strengths and areas of concern. They will also create a set of goals for therapy. When your teen has established a relationship with me, they will be encouraged to talk about and process the things that are bothering them.
